Correspondence, catalogs, circulars, newsletters, journals, scrapbooks, photographs, business records and memos, radio program transcripts and personal memorabilia. The earlier correspondence reveals accounts of Solomon Field's establishment of a homestead in Page County, Iowa, and an account of an overland journey to California by Celestia's father, Stephen Eastman. Materials of a personal nature from Henry Field in the collection include a scrapbook from his childhood; articles and essays related to his education; extensive personal correspondence; postcards and souvenirs from his travels; and copies of a newsletter devoted to Field family members from around the country edited by Henry called the Yellow letter. A similar publication by Henry's son, Philip, called the Field Family Circle (1933-1937) and another by his grandson, John, called the Field Family Magazine (1951-1952) are also included in the collection. Business related materials include crop records and tests; hog, merchandise, and seed catalogs; correspondence and memos; advertising materials; price lists; mailing lists; copies of the publication, Seed sense; and a series of publications of helpful hints for gardeners. Materials related to the radio station include transcripts of Field's program, the Letter Basket; station publications; programming schedules; postcards and photographs of radio personalities. In addition to the story of the growth of one of the nation's largest seed businesses and its founder, the collection provides information on several generations of the Field family, insight into the lives and sentiments of rural Americans during the time of the Depression, and an account of the development of commercial radio.
